[Český Krumlov。Czech Republic] As if fairy tales really exist

Cesky Krumlov

Cesky Krumlov is a small fairy-tale-like city located in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is around 3-hour car ride from Prague.

I visited CK in the summer of 2012 during my university graduation trip, during which I spent one month in Europe traveling to 15 cities in 6 countries, with a budget of thirty thousand Hong Kong dollars including all flight tickets, accommodation, food, museums entrance fees, and all other necessary expenses.

CK is one of the most memorable cities that I have ever been to. Surrounded by rolling hills and the Vltava River, CK is a picturesque, peaceful, and quiet city that is home to around only 14,000 residents. The CK Old Town and the Castle Complex was created by the Lords of Krumlov in 1253, with a mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture

To a person like me who has spent almost her whole life living in a concrete city like Hong Kong, the visit to CK brought life to a whole new dimension - yes, places like CK should only exist in fairy tales.

Day 1

The hostel that I stayed in is called Hostel Skippy Guesthouse. It is one of the most memorable hostels that I've ever stayed in. The guesthouse itself is a 200-year-old house located along the Vltava River. It is ran by 2 friendly ladies who refer themselves proudly as a musician and a writer.

This hostel is unique, down-to-earth, and cozy. I highly recommend this hostel to everyone who would like like spend a relaxing day in the local neighborhood among the nature.

Krčma v Šatlavské ulici is a very popular restaurant in CK for beer and pork knuckle, highly commended by both the locals and the tourists. The food was very affordable too - it costed only around HKD100 for a full portion of pork knuckle and beer!

Sitting next to us were 2 Chinese girls studying Phd in Europe. They came visit CK for a day trip. They were so excited to see Chinese people around that they happily shared with us their studies and families. One of them is already a mother and she just gave birth to a child back in China before coming to study in Europe. Her husband is also here with her studying Phd that they can only ask their parents to take care of the baby. It must be very hard for her.

The Cesky Krumlov Castle is a major attraction in this beautiful medieval town. The Castle is an original Gothic architecture built in the 1250s. It is the second largest castle in Czech Republic, only after the Hradcany Castle complex in Prague. For more history of this beautiful castle, you can click here for more information.

I settled down at a random restaurant by the Vltava River for an early dinner after visiting the Castle. I tried very hard to recall the name of the restaurant but unfortunately couldn't remember anything. But the food was great.

Pan-fried chicken breast, pineapple and mushroom with strawberry sauce (8/10)

Cesky Krumlov is an important cultural center in Czech. It houses several noteworthy museums and galleries in the Old Town, including the Regional Museum, which houses a permanent collection of around 34,000 valuable and historical art pieces and antiques. The city itself is very artistic. It is not difficult to see different interesting artworks as you walk along the streets.

The first day ended with a beautiful sunset.
Day 2
Perfect weather
A picturesque scene
The second day started perfectly with a brunch in old Bohemian style by the Vltava River at U Dwau Maryi. U Dwau Maryi is named by many as the best restaurant in Cesky Krumlov. The restaurant is located in a 500-year old house on a narrow cobbled lane, with both indoor and outdoor sitting. Given CK price level, the restaurant is considered quite affordable to me even when I was just a student with no income.

Ofcourse I went for outdoor sitting.

Bohemian brunch

The meal was great and it was a awesome experience. It was my first time having Bohemian food! Sitting by the calm riverside castle view with hot chocolate and red wine made it even better.

A peaceful and quiet old town
Dinner time came quickly after some more causal wandering around the beautiful city. Restaurant Na Louzi is a popular local restaurant located in the city center. Many locals love gather here with their friends to have a drink or two.

We didn't quite know what to order that the girl sitting next to me friendly suggested her recommendations. Since ordinary CK people do not really speak English too fluently, I were very surprised that I asked her did she studied overseas. She said that she were indeed a English teacher in Czech! Czech people are friendly!

Very fresh fish!

View of the square - it rained suddenly.

Cesky Krumlov is a true gem. The beauty of Cesky Krumlov is almost unreal. It is a place that should only exist in story books. Everything is perfectly beautiful here, as if fairy tales really exist.

This beautiful city remains as one of my most memorable cities that I've ever been to.
